There will always be other companies and people who try to make sure you are not going to be the leading person or new company in an industry. Simply put, you’ve got to stay above it.

We understand that as a market leader, we are in an envious position because we have the most inventions being sold, and we are building the most new product samples going into major retail buyer meetings. Our nature is to be humble and grateful and not speak negatively of those in the industry who have not been met with our level of success.

I find it very interesting because this is the story of all successful inventors. The story goes like this: Some inventor comes along and observes a challenge and works hard to invent something better. Once he or she goes to market, smart inventors know that the products, people and companies that will be displaced by what has been invented will begin to try and undermine them. THIS IS NORMAL! When you try and make things better in this world, you must hope that you’re strong enough to help lift an entire industry (even when they try to undermine you every day). Leadership carries a strong burden, and staying above the chaos your competition tries to create is what you must do to lift an entire market.

My organizations want to increase the pace of innovation in our country and our method took me many years to invent. It was my dream to invent a better way to invent, because the old ways didn’t work for me. They worked fine for large corporations with big budgets, but as an entrepreneur, I needed a more cost effective way. It was painful! If my better way to invent is successful one day, the name “Davison” will resonate in people’s minds as the way to develop their idea! Until then, we will continue to get our name on more and more inventions that are available for sale in the market.

The lesson is: Being a market leader carries a lot of responsibility. All of you inventors and entrepreneurs out there, who are dreaming of seeing your products in stores one day, must stay strong in the face of opposition and simply stay above it!

It isn’t often that you get to see a celebrity with millions of followers on a national news program launching her new innovations! When you watch the video below, you can learn how celebrity chef Paula Deen takes her few minutes in the spotlight to prioritize her message. She’s a pro!

Take note how she moves away from FOX & Friends’ desire to talk about fried chicken and begin with her new “Consumables” collection of baking mixes whose packaging we designed at Inventionland (for Jokari.com)!

Paula Deen got a full plug in as she talked about all of her new products, then eventually got to talking about the Fried Chicken Coating Mix that led to the purpose of their segment on FOX & Friends for National Fried Chicken Day. It was a beautiful transition and Paula and Jokari received lots of free advertising for the new product line we helped to develop at Inventionland!

The lesson for new innovators is to know how to craft and stay on message to get the word out!

If you desire to be an innovator, inventor, or entrepreneur, my blog will be dedicated to helping you learn how. I will be working hard to format my blog in a storytelling format. So, let us start. Today’s blog is about desire. Nothing happens without establishing a deep desire inside of you. Your first quest should be to understand yourself and what you desire to accomplish.

I have thought hard about whether or not I desired to spend my time creating a blog to help teach the principles of innovation, inventing, and entrepreneurship. After some deep thought, I decided it was important for me to teach and give to those who desire to better themselves in these areas. Now that I have clarity on what I desire, it will get done. So, the first lesson revolves around the word, desire, and it is the single most important step if you choose to be an innovator, inventor, or entrepreneur.

We recently celebrated the season with our annual holiday party, held at our fantastical design facility, Inventionland. Employees and their families joined us for an evening of food and festive fun. Santa and Mrs. Claus even made an appearance, though they were on call for the night taking wish lists from the little ones. We warmed up with fondue and an array of dinner selections in each of our sets. There were balloon animals, face painting, live piano, and other surprises to delight our guests. It was truly wonderful to see all of our talented team gathered together in one place.

Thanks to everyone for another great year. From all of us, happy holidays!

This weekend, the world will recognize and celebrate one of the most creative animators and entrepreneurs in history. Saturday, December 5th marks what would have been the 114th birthday of one of my own inspirational heroes, Walt Disney.

The products of Disney’s innate desire to create, such as the iconic character Mickey Mouse, still elicit a sense of nostalgia in all of us today.

But it is not only the products of his imagination that bring so many of us to admire Disney. The positive outlook he kept on life and a ‘dream it, do it’ attitude is something we can all thrive on in life and work.

In Disney’s own words:

“When you believe in a thing, believe in it all the way, implicitly and unquestionable.”

“The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing.”

“It’s kind of fun to do the impossible.”

Just a few days before his 114th birthday, as his imaginative legacy lives on, Walt Disney still reminds us that, “If you can dream it, you can do it.”

The post Patent Artwork: John Pattenden appeared first on George M. Davison.

John Pattenden is the creator of Patent Artwork, a collage project that combines the legal language of patents with images and sketches of an invention. These serve as fine art, memorable gifts, and inspirational reminders of the potential of an idea. One of our team members caught up with Pattenden to learn more about his original work.

What is Patent Artwork?

I look for historic/iconic patents and then extract key elements like drawings, claims, signatures etc. Next I create backgrounds using the Adobe Creative Suite blending different textures and images together. These are contextual with an aged look creating a sense of history. Finally, I take a photograph of the invention and blend it together with the other elements to create a collage, leaving the viewer with a glimpse of how a dream became a reality.

What is your background in art? How did you come to this particular project?

For most of my working life I was a financial analyst for a fortune 500 pharmaceutical company. I decided to leave the corporate world and pursue something I had a real passion for. That was photography. My initial patent artwork print was a one-off in which I was trying to overlay a drawing from an 1872 patent over the invention, a coffee mill. When I moved the drawing to the side of the image, I had that “eureka moment.” I was struck by the “story board” of how an idea was transformed into an actual product. I started looking around for other items that had patents that I could make prints of. Within six months that was all I was selling in my booth.

What appeals to you about inventions and the inventor spirit?

It’s all about problem solving: seeing an unmet need and then going about creating a solution. It can be something very simple like the counter weight for a trombone to getting man into space. One of the striking things about many inventors is how they look around at every day things and then apply what they see to solving the problem.

Are you inspired by any particular invention or inventor?

Obviously the Wright Brothers really did change the world in so many ways, so they are high on my list. As a guitarist, I do like Leo Fender. He was not even a musician but he got the first mass production guitar on the market, the Telecaster, and it is as popular today as ever. Following it up with the Stratocaster he gave us, arguably, two of the three most popular electric guitars of all time. He also gave us the two most popular electric basses, the Precision and the Jazz.

You can find artwork made from your favorite patented inventions here. Thanks, John Pattenden, for “bringing art to innovation and innovation to art!”

As an engineer, Ford brainstormed and developed ways to improve the processes with which he worked. His automobile experimentation, backed by iconic inventor Thomas Edison, would lead to the development of the Ford Motor Company, which set design and production standards for subsequent companies and remains a leader in the industry today.

Ford serves as a model inventor, entrepreneur, and innovator. He is a personal inspiration for my work to improve the process and efficiency of inventing.

I wanted to share his story with our team.

This weekend, employees from Inventionland and Davison joined us on a trip to the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village in Dearborn, Michigan, where we toured exhibits and tested out the famous Model T.

“What’s the difference between invention and innovation?” a tour guide asked us. “Improvement.”

This is what Ford represents – the process of improving upon existing processes and ideas in order to find a better way. This is the spirit of our endeavors at Inventionland and Davison.

Thanks to all who joined us for a fantastic day! Ihope you find inspiration in this iconic inventor.

I am very excited to announce that I have been recognized by Rotary International, a service organization that works to bring together professional leaders in an effort to provide high ethical standards and humanitarian services around the world.

Rotary International has recently named me a Paul Harris Fellow, “in appreciation of tangible and significant assistance given for the furtherance of better understanding and friendly relationship among peoples of the world.”

I am humbled to be honored by this prestigious organization, which continues to affect change, “uniting for the common good” across the world. Thank you!

I’ve always done things a little differently than most people. I discovered a love for entrepreneurialism early on, selling treats to my classmates and developing product ideas in high school. The time I spent dreaming in my childhood tree house would largely inform the creation and culture of my product development company, Davison, and then the world of Inventionland.

After completing my education in economics and computer science at Allegheny College, I began designing a product to sanitize toothbrushes. After two years of development, I was ultimately beat to the market by a large corporation. I was discouraged, but the failure would afford me insight into inherent challenges and flaws in the inventing process.

It became my project to make this process both affordable and more efficient through the Davison Inventing Method. By developing a system that drew from my experience in both economics and inventing, I was able to offer design, development, and licensing preparation under one roof. I understand the spirit of the innovator and the power that can be accessed by nurturing an idea into an invention. I wanted to be a part of that.

What began as a small venture in the basement of my grandfather’s house has expanded into the fantastical world of Inventionland, a 60,000-square-foot design facility where new products come to life in 16 themed sets. With over 1,200 client products in stores and online, we have helped inventors from all over the world materialize their ideas for over 20 years. That’s a better way to invent.
